Squirrel

Noted flash fiction author Joseph Del Priore was on his way to a reading when a flyng squirrel landed on his head and knocked him out.
Months in a coma ended with him awakening in a hospital. Nurse Beth, who had been taking care of him all those months, was overjoyed to see his eyes open. He slurred his words, but thanked her profusely for taking care of him. He wondered aloud if the squirrel who landed on him was demonized.
He looked up at nurse Beth. I need one favor, he whispered. Could you slide the bed pan under me and press down on my stomach? I feel like I'm ready to explode. Nurse Beth reached for a pillow and thought about something horrible and completely against hospital policy. No, she would let him live and write again. I think I need a bigger pan, she thought.

Squirrel

I need a squirrel in this photo of trees and leaves and blank sky. I need a story, a theme. Technically, this is a perfect shot. But it is good craft not art. Art has to move me.
Maybe if there was a Goodyear blimp in the sky. Someone leaping from the blimp. Or a monkey eating the squirrel. Violence. Tragedy. Evil.
I want to like this photo, praise its creator. But this is no different than looking up while walking in the park. Damn it, there should be a vulture in that tree. Or a falling leaf so I can stick in a metaphor about the fragility of life.
Yes, a vulture waiting for the guy who fell out of the blimp to land. That would give me a story.

My Network

I don't know where I'd be without my network. Hunting nuts is a difficult occupation, but I have no choice. I'm a squirrel.
My parents gave me little guidance other than telling me pine cones and weasel crap were not nuts. They also said beware of humans, who trap us, attach tiny headphones and play bad Bob Dylan loud. Things were tough until I attended a convention in another forest and learned the secrets of nut discovery and the proper digging technique, as well as how to store many more in my cheeks.
I highly recommend networking. I ran across some poor beaver trying to build a porch deck without proper guidance. Sad. It's one thing to construct a dam, but you have to move beyond the mundane.
Pardon me while I crunch this acorn.
